AHSAA Flag Football Spotlight
MONTGOMERY – Central-Phenix City High School’s Flag Football team rolled to two more victories last week – outscoring the two opponents 109-0. The Red Devils (5-0), coached by Mitchell Holt, find themselves ranked No. 5 in the nation in the USAToday national rankings released September 19 – and in this week’s AHSAA Flag Football Spotlight.
This growth of this new high school sport for girls is spreading like wildfire and the AHSAA’s teams are among the leaders. Central (6-0), fifth in the national poll last week, is one of four AHSAA squads earning a spot in the USAToday National Top 25 with Vestavia Hills at No. 18, Prattville at No. 19, and last year’s Class 1A/5A state tournament champion Wenonah cracked the poll at No. 25.
After last week’s performance, look for these teams to continue to climb. None, however, are any hotter than Central, which has outscored all six opponent ts 268-12 and are averaging 44.7 ppg while yielding only 2.0 ppg.
Star quarterback Gerritt Griggs has been phenomenal this season. In last week 49-0 win over Prattville, she was 6-of-10 passing for 127 yards and four TDs and rushed three times for 25 yards and another score. Top receiver was Colby Cook, who had four receptions for 203 yard and three TDs. Natalyn Lumpkin had three catches for 48 yards and one TD, and Mariah Harrison snagged two receptions for 43 yards with both resulting in touchdowns.
In Central’s 60-0 win over Percy Julian, Griggs was 3-of-4 passing for 68 yards and three touchdowns. Mariah Harrison, Ally Supan and Dane Ferguson also tossed TD passes in the win the Phoenix. Savannah Sevier, Lumpkin, Harrison, Gilley, Kinsey Carlisle and Khloe Broadwater each caught touchdown passes while Ferguson led the rushing attack with 30 yards on 12 carries.
Leading the defense was Kalea Lovejoy, who had four interceptions in the win over Percy Julian. Supan and Ari Shorter also had two picks each as the Red Devils, leading 28-0 after the first quarter, closed out the game with eight picks.

MILESTONES
CALLIE DAVIS, VESTAVIA HILLS: The sophomore established an AHSAA flag football record by scoring touchdowns on seven consecutive pass receptions last week. She finished the week with seven catches, 102 yards and seven scores in three wins – over Mountain Brook (52-0),; Opelika (25-0); and John Carroll Catholic (25-6). Junior quarterback Julie Rose tossed the TD scores and finished the week 46-of-94 passing for 653 yards and 12 touchdowns.
ABBY J. JOHNSON, DAPHNE: Also set an AHSAA Flag single-game record with five interceptions in a 32-12 win over B.C. Rain. She also had six catches for 219 yards and three TDs and returned one of her interceptions for a touchdown. She also had three receptions for 85 yards and a TD in the Trojans’ 25-6 win over Foley in Class 6A/7A Region 2.
PASSING
K.C. SLATON, SPANISH FORT: Passed for 241 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 39 yards as the Toros beat Satsuma 40-6 in Class 6A/7A, Region 2.
TYJA JACKSON, HUNTSVILLE: Finished the night 18-of-25 passing for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 21-7 victory in Class 6A/7A, Region 8 over Mae Jemison.
MARI-MARGRET GRAYSON, ALMA BRYANT: Led the Hurricanes (4-0) to 25-0 victory over McGill-Toolen Catholic with a 10-of-16 passing performance for 105 yards and four touchdowns. She also rushed five times for 30 yards in the Class 6A/7A, Region 1 win.
AUBREY GREGG, DAPHNE: Directed the Trojans (4-0) to a 25-6 victory over Foley and 32-12 triumph over B.C. Rain to remain unbeaten. She completed 13 passes for 234 yards and four TDs in the two games.
MACI JACOBS, SIPSEY VALLEY: Was 10-of-14 passing for 151 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-12 win over Holt in Class 1A/5A, Region 5. She also rushed for 47 yards and a TD on five carries.
KENLEY EVANS, PELL CITY: Was 9-of-15 passing for 114 yards and a TD in a 41-6 loss to Hewitt-Trussville in Class 6A/7A, Region 7. Teammate Chloe St. John was also 9-of-19 passing for 98 yards.
RUSHING
BASIA CARKOWSKA, SPANISH FORT: Ran for 168 yards on 12 carries and had 71 yards receiving in a 40-6 Toros’ win over Satsuma. She scored two touchdowns and on PAT.
KAYLEE SHABEL, DAPHNE: Ran for 69 yards on five carries to lead Daphne’s rushing game in wins over B .C. Rain and Foley.
PASS RECEIVING
ALEXIS RUBIN, VESTAVIA HILLS: Had eight receptions for 156 yards and three TDs as the Rebels won three games.
DASIA MATT, DAPHNE: Had four catches for 111 yards and a TD and also had four flag pulls on the defense as Daphne (4-0) beat Foley 25-6. She also hsf 45 yards rushing, 54 yards receiving, two TD catches and five flag pulls in Daphne’s 32-12 win over B.C. Rain.
LAYNE TURNER, VESTAVIA HILLS: The senior receiver caught 10 passes for 102 yards and one TD in three wins for Vestavia Hills.
KLOEANNE SMITH, HOMEWOOD: Had eight catches for 101 yards and teammate Liesel Kellen had nine catches and two TD receptions.
AVA MOORE, HUNTSVILLE: Grabbed six catches for 100 yards and one TD in Huntsville’s 21-6 victory over Mae Jemison. She also had one catch for 35 yards.
CLAIRE HUGHES, SIPSEY VALLEY: Caught four passes for 76 yards and a TD in Sipsey Valley’s 34-12 win over Holt.
JAMIRIAH HILL, PELL CITY: Pulled down four pass catches for 62 yards in a 41-6 loss to Hewitt-Trussville. Addy Simmons also had five catches for 50 yards.
ANDI WASHINGTON, DAVIDSON: Scored three touchdowns, two receiving and one on an interception return, in the Warriors’ 25-12 Class 6A/7A, Region 1 victory over Mary Montgomery.
DEFENSE
AUDREY MAJOR, HOMEWOOD: Had nine pulls on defense in the Patriots’ 29-22 victory over Tuscaloosa County.
COURTNEY BATTLE, HUNTSVILLE: Had seven flag pulls and two interceptions in the Panthers’ 21-6 victory over Mae Jemison in Class 6A/7A, Region 8.
MOLLY MITCHELL, VESTAVIA HILLS: The Rebels’ senior six tackles (flag pulls), two sacks, an interception, and scored three touchdowns as Vestavia posted three wins. She caught had six passes for 140 yards on offense and scored three touchdowns. Teammate Kate Fitzpatrick, a junior linebacker, had 10 stops to anchor the Rebels’ defense in three wins.
BRAYLIN MALLON, ALMA BRYANT: Had five tackles (flag pulls) and an interception on defense and scored on a 30-yard pass reception in the Hurricanes’ 25-0 win over McGill-Toolen Catholic in Class 6A/7A, Region 1.
LEX CHARQUENO, DAPHNE: Had five flag pulls on defense and caught a 34-yard TD pass in Daphne’s two wins over Foley and B.C. Rain. Mariah Williams also had five pulls and a TD reception.
ZOIE DAVIS, HILLCREST-TUSCALOOSA: Returned an interception for a pick-six and also snagged a long TD pass as the Patriots beat Tuscaloosa County 29-22 in Class 6A/7A, Region 4.
SPECIAL TEAMS
ANDEE HUDDLESTON, ALMA BYANT: Blocked a punt and had two tackles as Alma Bryant beat McGill-Toolen Catholic 25-0.
SAM RICHARDSON, SIPEY VALLEY: Returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown in Sipsey Valley’s 34-12 win over Holt.
