Jackson HS QB Duckworth Passes for 535 Yards to Share Spotlight
MONTGOMERY – Houston Academy senior quarterback Kadyn Mitchell completed four touchdown passes in last week’s 66-22 Class 3A, Region 2 victory over Wicksburg. Throwing TD passes comes naturally to the 6-foot, 199-pound QB. He became just the 10th quarterback in AHSAA history with Friday’s performance to toss more than 100 touchdown passes in his prep career.
Mitchell finished the night 13-of-16 passing for 364 yards. He has now thrown 102 TDs in his prep career with the rest of his senior season remaining. Reaching that milestone lands Mitchell in the AHSAA Football Spotlight for Week 4. He shares this week’s spotlight with another quarterback, junior Landon Duckworth of Jackson High School, who passed for a season-high 535 yards in the Aggies’ Class 4A, Region 1 win over Mobile Christian.
“Kadyn is an outstanding football player but an even better person,” said Houston Academy head football coach Eddie Brundidge, who was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2024. “He is a once-in-a-lifetime player and a coach on the field. It has been an honor watching him come in and start as an eighth grader and progress to where he is now.”
The Raiders were 3-7 in 2020, Mitchell’s eighth-grade year, improved to 6-5 his freshman year, and were 10-2 and 10-1 in 2022 and 2023. The Raiders are 4-1 this season and 33-16 overall with Mitchell as quarterback.
In last week’s win, teammate Andrew Gil rushed for four touchdowns, giving the Raiders a rare quarterback with four TD passes and a rusher with four scores in the same game. The 66 points scored was a school record for Houston Academy. Receiver Gabe Glover caught four passes for 145 yards and two scores covering 59 and 33 yards. He also had an interception on defense.
The AHSAA state passing touchdowns record (158) belongs to another Class 3A quarterback, Piedmont High School’s Jack Hayes. He led the Bulldogs to two state titles during his career, which spanned from 2018-2022. American Christian quarterback Chris Smelley, currently the head coach at Sylacauga High School, is second on the list with 134 in a career that spanned 2002-2005. Current Denver Broncos quarterback and former Pinson Valley QB Bo Nix ranks third with (127) from 2015-2018.
Other players with 100 or more career TD passes include Montgomery Catholic’s Caleb McCreary, (125) from 2020-2023; current University of Kentucky safety Kristian Story of Lanett, (119) from 2016-2019; Westminster Christian’s Brandon Musch, (108) from 2020-2023; Jacksonville’s Jim Ogle, (107) from 2019-2023; former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle of Westbrook Christian, (105) from 1996-1999; and Colbert Heights’ Jeremy Yates, (103) from 2004-2007.
Mitchell also boosted his career passing total to 6,939 yards, leaving him just 61 yards from becoming the 32nd player to reach 7,000 yards, according to the online AHSAA Record Book. He has surpassed five players on the list, including current NFL quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner at Florida State University Jameis Winston of Hueytown (6,871 yards) from 2008-2011); and former Alabama quarterback Tyler Watts (6,838, 1994-97).
Jackson High School’s Duckworth was 24-of-36 passing with five touchdowns in the Aggies’ victory over Mobile Christian. He also rushed for 44 yards on three carries and scored one TD – finishing the night with 579 total yards and six scores accounted for. His 535 yards rank seventh all-time and is the most this season. According to the AHSAA Record Book online, the state single-game mark (575) was set by Southside-Selma’s Christopher Thomas in a 44-16 win over Selma in 2021. Another Southside QB Roosevelt Towns passed for 567 yards in 2022 in a 56-35 victory over Dallas County for the second-most yards. Chris Smelley had 565 yards in the 2005 Class 1A state playoff semifinals in a 43-31 loss to Brantley. Class 1A Berry quarterback James Raines ranks fourth with 563 yards in a 71-22 victory over Brilliant in 2016. Lynn’s Dustin Cagle had 548 yards in a 61-36 Class 1A win in 2005, and Class 5A Russellville’s Jeremy Helms had 544 yards in a 48-20 victory over J.O. Johnson, also in 2005.
The previous high this season (490) was set by New Hope’s Lucas Terry in a season-opening 76-71 loss to Ohatchee.
