Finals Kick Off Dec. 4-5-6 at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium

     MONTGOMERY – The Class 7A Super 7 state championship lineup is all set after Friday night’s AHSAA semifinal playoffs concluded on Friday night.
    The field includes three undefeated teams, two teams that won state championships in 2023, and two teams playing in a state championship game for the first time in school history. All games will be played at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium Dec. 4-5-6 and will be televised live over the Alabama Public Television Network and live video streamed over the NFHS Network.

  • Montgomery Catholic (13-0) downed Vigor in the Class 5A semifinals Friday night to advance to the Super 7 state championship game on Thursday night, Dec. 5, to face Moody High School. The Blue Devils (11-2), coached by Jake Ganus, downed Leeds 42-0 to advance to the school’s first state championship game in school history. Catholic, coached by Kirk Johnson, is in the 5A title game after winning the Class 4A state championship last season.
  •  Montgomery Catholic’s girls’ flag team is also returning to the Class 1A/5A finals after losing to Wenonah in overtime in 2023.  The Lady Knights (16-4) will also face Moody (17-2) in the Class 1A/5A state championship game
    at 11 a.m., on Wednesday at Protective Stadium. Flag football, which spent three seasons as an emerging sport, is now officially a state championship sport with the 1A/5A finals the official state championship game.
  • Central-Phenix City (11-2) clinched a berth in the 7A championship game two weeks ago and will be meeting Thompson (10-3) in a rematch of the 2023 finals. The 7A boys’ finals kick off the AHSAA boys’ championships on Wednesday night, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m.
  • Central-Phenix City’s girls’ flag football team also won the girls’ 6A/7A state championship last season in the final year of flag being an emerging sport. The Lady Red Devils (18-0), which is riding  36-game winning streak and is ranked No. 1 in the USA Today National flag football rankings,  will meet Spain Park (15-4-1) in the 6A/7A flag finals Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Jaguars are ranked No. 19 in the national poll.
  • Saraland (13-0), the 2023 Class 6A state runner-up, is back in the boys’ Class 6A finals on Friday night, Dec. 6, versus Parker High School (13-1). The Spartans, coached by Jeff Kelly, are reaching the 6A state finals  for the third year in a row – winning the title in 2022 and finishing runner-up in 2024. Parker’s Thundering Herd, coached by Frank Warren, is making its  first state football championship appearance since 1980.
  • Class 1A Wadley (12-0), which downed Hackleburg 69-31 in the semifinals, will face Maplesville (12-2), a 28-21 winner over Elba in the other semifinal game Friday. The Bulldogs, who come into the finals averaging 55.5 ppg, played in the state finals in 2021. The Red Devils prevented Elba senior running back from scoring a touchdown in its win – with the Auburn signee picking up 185 yards rushing. He had three touchdowns called back for penalties, however, and finished his high school career scoring 201 TDs.
  • Class 4A Cherokee County (13-1) and Class 2A Reeltown (13-1) are back in the finals again – after finishing as runner-up in 2023. The Warriors of Coach Jeff Kelley are in the finals for the third year in a row and will take on Jackson (13-1).
  • Newcomers to the state finals include Class 5A Moody and Class 2A Tuscaloosa Academy (12-2). The Knights will face Reeltown in the 2A finals at 3 p.m., Friday.
  • Houston Academy (13-1) is making its first appearance in a championship game since 1973 when the Raider face Mars Hill Bible (13-1) in the Class 3A finals at 11 a.m., Thursday.
