AHSAA Playoffs Round 2 set for 52 Games Tonight

MONTGOMERY –   Pleasant Grove High School senior running back Collin Moore and Mars Hill Bible’s Isaiah Owens dazzled the crowds at their playoff games last week with each making spectacular individual plays in their teams’ playoff wins.
Moore, who rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries as the Spartans (9-1) downed Straughn 61-21 in the opening round of the AHSAA Class 4A state playoffs, pulled off the play of his career in the first half with the Spartans backed up on their own 1-yard line. On the next play, Moore caught a screen pass from Kaleb Freeman two yards deep in the end zone, cut to his right, then found a seam up the middle of the field on his way to a 99-yard touchdown reception.
Even though he sped 102 yards, the line of scrimmage was officially the 1-yard line, hence the 99-yard TD. It was Moore’s sixth pass reception of the season. He has rushed for 1,256 yards and 17 TDs on 165 carries heading into this week’s home game versus St. Michael Catholic (10-1). Freeman was 11-of-18 passing for 338 yards and five touchdowns in the win. He heads into tonight’s second-round battle at home with St. Michael Catholic (10-1) with 2,360 yards passing on the season He has completed 122-of-178 passes with 32 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
It was the second time in two years that Pleasant Grove, coached by Darrell LeBeaux, has completed a 99-yard TD pass in a game. Clarence Taylor caught a 99-yard TD pass from Eric Handley last year in a 22-21 win over Parker. LeBeaux’s head-coaching record since 2018 is 75-15 – which ranks second in school history behind the school’s all-time wins leader Jim Elgin, who was 98-64 in his tenure from 2004-2017. The AHSAA has been able to document twenty 99-yard TD runs and seventeen 99-yard passes for TDs.
Mars Hill Bible’s Owens had three interceptions in the Panthers’ Class 3A first-round 69-40 victory over Midfield. One, however, will go down in history as one of the longest in AHSAA history. With Midfield lined up inside the Panthers’ 10-yard line midway through the second period, a pass into the end zone was picked off by Owens three yards behind his own goal line. He then dodged three tackles as he weaved his way to the 20-yard line and then sped the rest of the way for a touchdown – officially credited with a 103-yard return. His 100 yards-plus return was the 27th interception return of 100 yards or more in AHSAA history, based on the current AHSAA Record Book. The longest on record is 108 yards by Jimmy Pitts of Notasulga in a 2018 game versus Autaugaville. Opp’s Zozo Lindsey had a 107-yard interception return in 2020 versus Geneva.
Owens finished the night with 141 total return yards on his three picks and also added a 17-yard pass reception from his receiver position on offense for another TD. Teammate Caden Chandler, a senior  fullback, also had a big night for Mars Hill Bible (10-1) with 119 yards rushing on 12 carries with four touchdowns. He also scored on a 39-yard touchdown reception – described by onlookers as a “jaw-dropping” effort as he maneuvered through several defensive players to reach the end zone.
Mars Hill Bible is on the road tonight at Geraldine (9-2) as the second round of the AHSAA 59th State Football Playoffs continue its journey to the Super 7 State Championships set for Birmingham’s Protective Stadium Dec. 4-5-6.
The AHSAA’ s second round will include 52 games tonight – with the AHSAA TV Network/WOTM Game of the Week featuring Moody (8-2) at Wenonah (8-3) in Class 5A. The Blue Devils of Coach Jake Ganus beat Arab 49-7 last week with quarterback Charlie Johnston, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior, was 14-of-16 passing for 301 yards and four TDs. He is 110-of-166 for 2,028 yards this season with 24 TDs. The Dragons, coached by Nicholas Howard, beat Russellville in overtime 30-28 – coming back from a 22-8 deficit in the fourth period to tie the game and then win in the OT. The Dragons defense stopped the Tigers on fourth down in overtime just one foot shy of the end zone to seal the win.

MILESTONES
ANOTHER HENDERSON MILESTONE:
Elba’s Alvin Henderson added another milestone to his growing list of accomplishments in last week’s Class 1A playoff victory over Verbena 77-14. Two weeks after breaking the AHSAA state career rushing record, the senior running back and nation’s current high school rushing leader this season, surpassed the 10,000 yards career rushing mark, boosting his total to 10,176 with a 241-yard, five touchdown performance on just six carries in the Tigers’ 77-14 playoff win over Verbena. He became the eighth high school player in the nation to ever reach 10,000 rushing yards in a career and the first from the state of Alabama. Henderson, whose name is already all over the AHSAA leader board in season and career lists, including a handful of records, claimed two more state records last week.
During the win over Verbena, he rushed for five touchdowns (on just six carries) and scored on a two-point conversion, giving him 51 rushing touchdowns and 318 total points on the season. He is the state’s first player with 50 rushing TDs in two different seasons and first with 300 or more points in two different seasons. Henderson set state season records in both categories last year with 61 TDs and 408 points. He currently has 2,866 yards rushing in 11 games this season on 211 carries for  13.6 yards per carry. He had five rush attempts in the first quarter and one in the second quarter versus Verbena with his runs covering 30, 12, 1, 52, 90 and 56 yards for a 40.2-yards-per-carry average. Elba (9-2) goes on the road in round two to face Linden (8-2) this week. Henderson needs only 134 yards for a second straight 3,000-yard rushing season.
