AHSAA Spotlight wrapping up Weeks 9 & 10

ELBA – The last two weeks of the AHSAA’s 2024 football regular season literally re-wrote AHSAA Record Book. Those record-breaking efforts grab the final AHSAA Spotlight this week as 208 schools head into the state football playoffs.
     The records included:

  • Senior running back Alvin Henderson became the AHSAA’s all-time leading rusher Friday night with 199 yards on 27 carries as the Tigers (8-2) beat Florala (7-3) 40-24 in the final game of the regular season for both 1A powers. He scored four TDs in the win – upping his season total to 2,625 yards on 207 carries and 46 touchdowns – which leads the nation this season according to MaxPreps. His career rushing total is now 9,935 yards and 178 rushing touchdowns. He could become the first 10,000 rusher in state history in the first round of the playoffs – which would put him in an elite group nationally as just the eighth high school running back to reach that milestone in his career. Henderson’s effort surpassed the previous record (9,839 yards) set by Alexandria’s Mac Campbell in a career that spanned from 1993-1997. Campbell was very supportive of Henderson’s chase for his record that stood the test of time for 27 years. He made the trip from his home in Huntsville to be on hand for Henderson’s milestone achievement. Henderson plans to attend Auburn University next year.
Elba’s star running back led the nation with 68 touchdowns scored last season and set the AHSAA single season rushing record with 3,523 yards on 225 carries – a 15.7 yards-per-carry average – and also set a state mark with 61 rushing touchdowns. He is averaging a career best 262.5 yards rushing per game this season. He has averaged 13.4 yards per carry over his high school career with 744 carries. He has rushed for 178 touchdowns and has scored 188 touchdowns overall including pass receiving, punt and kickoff returns. His tandem yards total, which includes kick returns, passing, and receiving yards, is 10,481 yards in 52 games.

  • Gayesville High School senior running back Alex Baty set  a new single-game rushing record on the same night Henderson set the all-time career rushing record. Baty had 43 grueling carries for 535 yards and six touchdowns as the Class 1A Trojans beat Woodville 62-28. That effort surpassed the previous record (531) set by Tony Dixon of Parrish High School in Walker County  in a wild 81-58 win over Hubbertville in 2003. The future University of Kentucky standout had 21 carries in that win. Baty also broke the school record (470 yards) set by Jerry Stancil in a 48-28 win over Spring Garden in 2004. Stancil had 23 carries in his big game.

  • Russell County High School’s Bryson Riggins completed 26-of-30 passes for 543 yards and nine touchdowns – both season highs this season in the AHSAA – to lead Russell County (8-2) to a 77-40 victory over Rehobeth in Class 6A, Region 2. The win clinched the No. 2 seed in Class 6A, Region 2 for Russell County (8-2). His nine TDs tied a state record set by James Raines of Berry in a 68-0 win over Brilliant in 2015, and by Brent Gulledge of Victory Christian in a 70-6 win over Lyman Ward in 2004. Riggins’ 543 yards rank seventh all-time for most passing yards in an AHSAA game.
The state record is 575 yards passing by Southside-Selma’s Christopher Thomas in a 44-16 win over Selma in 2021. Riggins followed with a 20-of-33 passing effort for 353 yards and four touchdowns in s 35-23 win over Beauregard. He has passed for 896 yards and 13 TDs in his last two games and is 168-of-286 for 2,681 yards and 36 TDs for the season. In the win over Rehobeth, he completed passes to eight different receivers as Russell County rolled up 721 total yards. Denver Harper had eight catches for 218 yards and three TDs, Jamari Burnett caught five passes for 86 yards and three TDs, Quintin Lewis had five receptions for 91 yards and two TDs, and Noah Sterling had two catches for 89 yards and one TD. Riggins has a TD pass of at least 25 yards in all 10 games this season. His longest pass in each game was 59, 40, 40, 25, 53, 65, 80, 67, 70 and 55 yards. Those 10 bombs alone account for 484 of his passing yards this season.

  • GUNNER RIVERS, ST. MICHAEL CATHOLIC: The sophomore quarterback and son of former NFL super star QB and St. Michael head coach Philip Rivers led the Cardinals to a 9-1 regular season with three big games to close the season. Gunner was 17-of-25 passing for 317 yards and three touchdowns in the school’s biggest win in history last week, a 35-28 victory over UMS-Wright. He closed out the 2024 regular season for Class 2A Tuscaloosa Academy with  a 17-of-26 passing effort for 149 yards and two TDs in a 14-13 win over Class 3A Bayside Academy. Lancaster has already completed 188-of-259 passes this season in the first 10 games for 2,866 yards and 33 touchdowns – and just three picks. His career numbers include 655-of-943 passing for 9,966 yards and 110 TDs. Like Elba’s Henderson, he needs just 34 yards to join the 10,000-yard club – albeit his total is passing yardage. His 9,966 yards passing currently rank fifth all-time with Piedmont’s Jack Hayes, who was 721-of-1,169 passing for 11,024 yards and 158 TDs in  a career that spanned from 2018-2022.
