MONTGOMERY – Locust Fork High School quarterback Dylan Embry is known best by his nickname “Dino.” Based on his performance last season and this year, however, his nickname could just as easily be “Dynamo.”
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior rolled up 443 total yards, including 317 yards rushing, as the Hornets (4-0) of Coach Billy Adams beat Westbrook Christian 47-43 in Class 3A, Region 6 last week to land in the AHSAA Football Spotlight” this week. He had 28 rush attempts for 317 yards and was 5-of-10 passing for 126 yards accounting for five touchdowns in the big win. He also had 21 tackles from his position of middle linebacker on defense.
Embry’s performance edged out strong efforts by Fort Payne place-kicker Conner Hughes, Elba senior running back Alvin Henderson and an impactful defensive standout Kaleb Spivey of Benjamin Russell school for this week’s Spotlight.
Embry now has 992 yards rushing this season in three games – an average of 330.7 yards per contest. He did not play in Locust Fork’s win over Appalachian.      Locust Fork, competing in Class 3A, Region 6 this season after going 12-1 last season in Class 2A with its only loss coming in the quarterfinals to eventual state champion Fyffe 63-33. This week, Adams’ team faces  Blount County rival J.B. Pennington (3-0) in a key battle in the nine-team Class 3A, Region 6. An open date will follow and then a key battle with perennial region favorite Piedmont the next week.
Hughes delivered the two longest field goals of the season – and two of the longest in history – with a 57-yard field in the first half in Fort Payne’s 14-13 battle in Class 6A, Region 8 with Southside. That kick tied seven other AHSAA kickers, including former Fort Payne kicking legends Logan McPherson and Alex McPherson, for the fourth longest field goal of all time in the AHSAA. Then, with just over two minutes left in the game, Hughes booted  56-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 14-13 victory over the Panthers. The longest field goal (61 yards) record is shared by Alex McPherson and Auburn’s Sage Ledbetter. Fort Payne’s most famous kicker, Alex and Logan’s middle brother Evan McPherson, booted s 60-yarder in 2017, which tied the record set by Pelham’s Michael Proctor in 1991 and tied by Auburn’s Towns McGough I 2023.
Fort Payne’s kicking legacy has centered around the McPherson brothers until Friday night’s performance by Hughes. Evan McPherson is kicking in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals. Alex is on the Auburn University squad, and Logan was a punter in college at Louisiana Tech. The two field goals over 50 yards in the same game ranks second all time in the AHSAA Record Book. Alex McPherson had three in a 32-7 win over North Jackson in 2021. Three others, Logan McPherson (2012), Cade Stinnett of Enterprise (2013) and Kevin Gentle of Guntersville (1993) each have kicked two in a single game.
Henderson, who had nine TDs and three 2-point conversions the prior week in a wild 8-72 four-overtime loss to McKenzie, totaled 345 rushing yards and seven touchdowns (12, 57, 18, 39, 11, 55 and 57 yards) on 18 carries in the Tigers’ 68-28 Class 1, Region 2 win over Kinston. It was Henderson’s third 300 yards-plus performance in four games this season and seventh over the last eight games counting back to the start of last year’s state playoffs. He leads the AHSAA in rushing after four games with 1,294 yards and 24 TDs with just one fumble in 98 carries. He is averaging 323.5 yards rushing per game and 13.2 yards per carry this season. He’s also averaging six touchdowns per game.
For his career, Henderson has rushed for 8,571 yards and 156 touchdowns on 630 carries; has caught 10 passes for 211 yards and two scores; has returned two punts and three kickoffs for touchdowns for a total of 166 TDs, three 2-point conversions and 990 points scored. Add his two TD passes and he has accounted for 1,002 points in his prep career with the  rest of his senior season to go. He has amassed 9,080 total yards in 42 games – an average of 216.2 yards per contest. He’s averaged 13.6 per rush attempt and 13.9 yards per touch every time he get the pigskin in his clutches … and that’s not counting 450 more yards on 11 kickoff/punt returns combined – which ups his yardage to 14.4 yards per touch.
Spivey helped Class 6A Benjamin Russell’s special teams make a big contribution in a 55-21 Class 6A, Region 3 victory over Chilton County. He and teammate Micah Murphree each blocked a punt to set up two offensive touchdowns, and Spivey tackled the punter on another punt attempt following a high snap at the Tigers’ own 8-yard to set up another score.
“Special teams set up a lot of scores for us,” head coach Smitty Grider told the Alexander City Outlook. “We really emphasize that, so I’m glad to see us start playing better on special teams. It’s been an issue for us, but these last two games, they’ve been a lot better. If we can continue to get better with our punting game and our return game continues to give us short fields, that’s something we can lean on.”
