MONTGOMERY – B.B. Comer High School beat Vincent High School 36-36 in last season’s Class 2A, Region 4 football clash – and rolled all the way to the Super 7 Class 2A state championship game last December.
Don’t be surprised if the winner of tonight’s rematch between the Tigers (4-0) and Yellow Jackets (4-0) follows the same path. The battle of small school unbeatens at Sylacauga’s Legion Stadium at 7 p.m., is this week’s AHSAA TV Network/WOTM TV Game of the Week.
A special addition to tonight’s Game of the Week will be reports spliced in from the Class 1A, Region 4 battle between Loachapoka and Notasulga.
B.B. Comer and Vincent both coming in at 2-0 in Region 4 tonight. Both are averaging 39 points a game and allowing just over eight points per contest on defense.
Coach Adam Fossett, who has an 87-76 career record with tops at Winterboro, Childersburg and Smiths Station, took over a struggling B.B. Comer program in 2018 and steadily kept his nose to the grindstone as the Tigers improved steadily each year. His team was 2-8 in 2018, made the playoffs and finished 6-6 in 2-0, then followed with 9-2 in 2020, 10-3 in 2021 and 12-3 in last year’s Class 2A state championship runner-up season. Fossett is 48-22 at B.B. Comer, which places him second in school history in wins behind legendary Bobby Overton, who had 202-176-4 record as head coach from 1966-2001.
A big reason for the Tigers’ success is anchored on offense e in unbeaten and 2-0 in region play 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior running back and linebacker Kamore Harris, a first-team All-State selection last season who rushed for 1,660 yards last season and 1,908 as a sophomore. He has gained 548 yards this season on 40 rushes – 13.7 yards per carry – for 548 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. His career total is 4,116 rushing yards 56 touchdowns with the rest of his senior season to go.
Quarterback D.L. Harvey has 225 yards rushing and one TD on 18 carries. He is also 12-of-40 passing for 164 yards and three scores with a long of 66 yards to Harris. Raelon Sims, a junior, has completed 3-of-5 passes for 75 yards – 64 coming on a TD pass to Harvey. Sims had 115 yards rushing and two TDs on 17 carries and four catches for 34 yards. Sophomore Camron Gaddis has picked up 189 yards rushing on 31 carries with one touchdown.
Defensively, Harris who rarely comes off the field, is averaging almost 10 tackles per game. Leading tackler last season and so for this year is 5-7, 125-pound junior defensive back Richard Weed.
Vincent, coached by Lucas Weatherford, who also took over the Yellow Jackets program in 2018. His team’s steady improvement has taken a little longer with only eight wins in his first three seasons. The Jackets finished 6-4 in 2021 and 10-2 last season – losing Vincent in the 36-35 setback in the regular season and a 43-28 second-round playoff game to Clarke County, the defending state champion in 2022. Weatherford’s 28-29 overall record includes 20-6 since 1921.
This year’s team got a big boost of confidence from the Vincent baseball program, which captured Class 2A state runner-up last spring.
Much like B.B. Comer, Weatherford’s ball control philosophy and sting defense are really taking their toll on Yellow Jackets opponents. The offense is centered around explosive running back Rykelus Robertson. The 5-foot-6, 150-pound speedster has rushed for 577 yards this season on 61 carries and has 10 touchdowns. His career numbers are 246 rush attempts in 21 games for 2,473 yards and 28 touchdowns. He has TD runs of 69, 85 and 46 yards already this season and streaked for touchdowns of 85, 80 and 54 yards in three separate games last season.
Junior quarterback Cason Fields is averaging 10.1 yards per carry with 243 yards on 24 rush attempts this season with three TDs. His longest TD run covered 62 yards. Fields is also 14-of-27 passing for 157 yards and two more scores. Freshman Daniel Mims has thrown three passes, completed them all for 113 yards and two TDs – the longest a 52-yard strike to senior receiver Mattson Davis.
Senior linebacker Raymond Albright is averaging 11.5 tackles per game this season with 10 stops for losses. He has caused one fumble and has blocked a punt. Junior defensive lineman Ethan McElrath has four recorded sacks.
