AHSAA TV Network Playoff Game of the Week

MONTGOMERY – Arab High School and Moody High School squared off twice against each other in school history. Each team has one win in  the series.
Both are extremely excited about meeting in round two of the AHSAA Class 5A state football playoffs this week – and proud to be highlighted as the AHSAA TV Network Playoff game of the Week.
Both teams come in at 10-1 on the season after posting impressive wins last week. The Knights of Coach Lee Ozmint beat East Limestone 54-14 and the Blue Devils of Coach Jake Ganus downed Jasper 29-21.
WOTM TV will be producing Moody vs. Arab battle, which will be shown over the AHSAA TV Network’s participating stations across the state. The contest will also be live streamed over the NFHS Network and over wotm.tv. Executive producer is Vince Earley of WOTM TV.
Moody and Arab have solid senior classes.
“We have 22 seniors this year,” said Ozmint. “They were freshmen when I came in as head coach four years ago. We have been through a lot of challenges together. They have made me so proud. They have been an honor to coach.”
Leading the  team at quarterback is senior Aidan Cox. He was forced into a starting role as a sophomore due to an injury and as a junior, he  found himself relegated to a reserve role when the original starter was able to return at full strength.
“Aidan came to me and expressed a desire to play more – somewhere,” said Ozmint. “He moved to our special  teams, was a long snapper and played some free safety on defense. More importantly, his desire to help the team wherever possible demonstrated to his teammates just how unselfish he is and what kind of leader he is. This year, he has done an excellent job leading this team.”
Cox has passed for 1,188 yards and 14 touchdowns this season completing 76-of-106 passes with only one pick. Running back Drake Franklin has piled up 1,522 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns on 205 carries. Receiver Spencer Strickland has 21 catches for 444 yards and  three scores.
Ganus took over at Moody last winter. The Blue Devils were 0-9 in 2020 but improved to 6-4 last  year. “We have a great group of seniors who bought in to what we were trying to do, ” he said. “This has felt like a great fit for me and my family right from the start. That is what makes this job so special.”
One of the leaders this year has been senior left tackle Mason Myers. At 6-foot-6, 270 pounds, he has earned the nickname “Pancake 50”. He takes his job seriously.
“My job is to protect our quarterback and running backs,” he said. He acknowledged it was also his job to lead the  team on and off the court. Ganus said Myers does it by his own example.
Myers has done his job well. Moody quarterback Cole McCarty is 147-of-205 passing this season for 2,664 yards and 35 TDs – with just five interceptions. Running back Blaine Burks has gained 1,552 yards on 153 carries and has scored 20 touchdowns. He has had no fumbles all season. Receivers Davion Dozier and Kolby Seymour have 48 and 43 receptions each, respectively, this season. Dozier had 1,071 receiving yards and 17 touchdown catches. Seymore has 815 yards and 11 TD receptions. Defensively, middle linebacker Zane Smith has 114 tackles on the season, and linebacker  Dewayne Logan has 106.
The AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week is one of 52 second-round state playoff games set for this week. Two games will be tonight, Loachapoka (9-1) at Millry (10-1) in Class 1A, and Ramsay at Guntersville in Class 5A.
Since 50 games will be played on Veterans Day, schools have been encouraged to recognize veterans from their communities at their games.
