MONTGOMERY – The B.C. Rain Red Raiders are hitting their stride.
The girls’ flag football team, coached by Frank Goode, opened the season going 2-2. But since then, B.C, Rain has raced past their competition in Class 1A/5A, Region 1 at a pace of 57.3 points scored per game. In their last encounter, Goode’s Raiders set an AHSAA flag record scoring 78 points in a 78-6 win over Citronelle to improve to 4-0 in Region 1. In the process, senior quarterback Mya Crawford set another AHSAA flag record passing for 371 yards to land her and her teammates in this week’s AHSAA Flag Football Spotlight.
Crawford, who rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, was 16-of-21 passing and fired five touchdown passes – three to senior receiver Mikeriah Laland. Crawford finished with 444 total yards and accounted for seven TDs, and Laland had seven receptions for 215 yards and also rushed for 73 yards and a fourth TD on two carries. She also had an interception on defense. The Red Raiders’ defense was anchored by junior defensive back Kierra McPherson, who swiped four interceptions, one she returned for a touchdown, and had three flag pulls. On offense, McPherson had four catches for 107 Yards and two touchdowns.
B.C. Rain (6-2) is 4-0 in region play outscoring the region opponents 229-8 averaging 57.3 ppg in those contests. For the season, the Raiders are averaging 37.6 ppg. The Mobile school has one game left with Alma Bryant next week.
B.C. Rain’s high-powered offense edged out another record-setting contest in north Alabama last week. Bob Jones and Sparkman hooked up in a seven-overtime battle with the Patriots (6-1) emerging with a 25-19 win. Bob Jones also beat Grissom 25-7.
Kourtney Dunham intercepted a pass in the final OT period to seal the win over the Senators. Receiver Charity Buchanan had two touchdown catches and two interceptions for Bob Jones, and quarterback Carson Horton passed for three TDs and rushed for a fourth score. The seven overtimes equal the most OT periods played in boys’ football in the AHSAA. Lawrence County beat East Lawrence 62-54 in a seven-OT thriller in 2015, and Murphy topped Theodore 33-26 in seven extra periods in 1979.

PASSING/RUSHING:
GERRITT GRIGGS, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: The Red Devils’ senior quarterback was 13-of-16 passing for 214 yards and five touchdowns to lead Central-Phenix City (11-0), ranked first in the nation in the USA Today national flag football rankings, to a 48-0 win over Brewbaker Tech. Central also beat Harris County (GA) 33-12 and Columbus (GA) 33-0. She had seven carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-12 win over Harris County. She also completed 11-of-23 passes for 161 yards and also caught a 19-yard TD pass. In the Columbus win, Griggs was 16-of-25 passing for 170 yards and three TDs, rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, and she caught a 19-yard pass for a score.
AUBREY GREGG, DAPHNE: Led the unbeaten Trojans (9-0) to a 24-12 win over Enterprise and a 12-6 victory over Dothan to clinch the Class 6A/7A Region 2 title. She was 19-of-30 for 257 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Enterprise. She was 11-of-20 for 156 yards and two scores in the win over Dothan.
MARI-MAGRET GRAYSON, ALMA BRYANT: Was 16-of-20 passing for 263 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-6 win over Theodore for the unbeaten Hurricanes (8-0).
JULIA ROSE, VESTAVIA HILLS: Was 15-of-27 passing for 180 yards and one TD as the Rebels (16-1), ranked 13th in the USA Today national poll, beat Helena 28-0. She was 20-of-49 passing for 289 yards in 21-14 loss to Hewitt-Trussville. The Huskies intercepted four passes in the upset win.
KOOL-AID STURDIVANT, SUMTER CENTRAL: Had 220 yards total offense and three touchdowns as the Jaguars (1-3) beat Holt 32-12.
KAYTIE CHANDLER, PRATTVILLE: Was 8-of-15 passing for 125 yards and one TD to receiver Brooklyn Johnson as the Lions (10-2), ranked 20th in the nation by USA Today, clinched the Class 6A/7A, Region 5 title beating Spain Park 14-6. She also rushed for 65 yards and one score.
SYDNEY FREEMAN, NORTHSIDE METHODIST: Was 8-of-21 passing for 124 yards and two TDs for Northside Methodist (4-10) in a 23-18 loss to Enterprise.
TYJA JACKSON-AGNEW, HUNTSVILLE: Was 7-of-15 passing for 100 yards and had one TD rushing in a 25-7 win over Grissom for the Panthers (4-3).
KEY KNIGHT, FOLEY: Passed for five touchdowns as the Wolves (9-2) beat Spanish Fort 34-28 in Class 6A/7A, Region 2.
PASS RECEIVING:
AMIYAH CARVIN, FOLEY: Had seven catches for 175 yards and three TDs in Foley’s win over Spanish Fort. She also had five flag pulls on defense.
CAROLINE NINTZEL, VESTAVIA HILLS: Caught five passes for 129 yards in the loss to Hewitt-Trussville.
SAVANNAH SEVIER, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Had four receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-0 win over Brewbaker Tech.
MADI-MARI GRAYSON, ALMA BRYANT: Had seven receptions for 115 yards and a TD as Hurricanes beat Theodore to improve to 5-0 in lass 6A/7A, Region 1.
DASIA MATT, DAPHNE: Pulled down seven passes for 104 yards and two TDs in the Trojans’ 24-12 win over Enterprise. She also had six flag pulls on defense.
MARIAH HARRISON, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Had four receptions for 75 yards and a TD in the win over Harris County, and made six catches for 77 yards and a TD in the win over Columbus.
CALLIE DAVIS, VESTAVIA HILLS: Had five pass catches for 95 yards and a touchdown in a 28-0 win over Helena. She also returned a punt 55 yards for a score.
ABBY JOHNSON, DAPHNE: Caught six passes for 95 yards on offense and had an interception on defense to help the Trojans defeat Enterprise 24-12. She had six receptions for 63 yards and a TD versus Dothan and had three pass breakups on defense.
AVA MOORE, HUNTSVILLE: Had six receptions for 50 yards and rushed for one TD in a 25-7 win over Grissom.
KLOEANNE SMITH, HOMEWOOD: Had five receptions for 51 yards as Homewood’s only touchdown in an 18-7 loss to Leeds.
CHLOE LEAHY, VESTAVIA HILLS: Caught three passes for 47 yards and was 2-of-4 passing for 56 yards and another TD in the win over Helena.
COLBY COOK, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Caught two passes, both for touchdowns, in a 48-0 win over Brewbaker Tech.
NATALYN LUMPKIN, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Had three receptions with two touchdowns and had an interception on defense. Lumpkin had two receptions for 37 yards and a TD versus Columbus.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:
ERIANA BENSON, PRATTVILLE: Had 10 sacks, one resulting in a safety, for the Lions’ 14-6 victory over Spain Park. Teammates Lanieya Page and Kehyliah Rogers also had one interception each.
KAMRYN HARRIS, ANNISTON: The eighth grader had four touchdowns over a two-game stretch in a 20-18 overtime loss to Ramsay and a 32-6 win over Fultondale. She returned two interceptions 79 and 47 yards for touchdowns and had a 60-yard reception for a TD. Teammate Arianna Story, a sophomore, scored on a 50-yard run and completed two TD passes covering 60 and 10 yards.
DAKOTA PERRY, NORTHSIDE METHODIST: Had five flag pulls in a 26-6 loss to Enterprise and eight pulls in a 19-0 loss to Brewbaker Tech.
EMILY SPOONER, VESTAVIA HILLS: Had eight flag pulls, including six sacks, and scored a rushing TD in the Rebels’ win over Helena. She had four pulls with three sacks in the loss to Hewitt-Trussville and rushed for one score on offense.
MORGAN FELTON, HOMEWOOD: Had eight flag pulls in an 18-7 loss to Leeds for the Patriots (8-4). Teammate Audrey Major also had five pulls and an interception.
BRAYLIN MALLON, ALMA BRYANT: Had six flag pulls on defense and three catches on offense for 45 yards and two TDs in a 40-6 win over Theodore.
EMMIE HAYWOOD, NORTHSIDE METHODIST: Had six flag pulls in a 23-18 loss to Enterprise.
KAMOURI JOHNSON, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Had five flag pulls in the Red Devils’ win over Brewbaker Tech.
ALLY SUPAN, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Had five flag pulls in the Red Devils’ win over Brewbaker Tech. She was 4-for-4 passing for 48 yards and a TD in Central’s win over Harris County, and she rushed for 48 yards on seven carries and another touchdown.
CAMPBELL COMINSKY, HUNTSVILLE: Had three flag pulls on defense and an interception she ran back for a touchdown in the Panthers’ 25-7 victory over Grissom. Teammates Crystal Harris-Williams and Sachi Singh had 3.5 flag pulls each.
AUBREE THOMAS, ANNISTON: An eighth grader on the Bulldogs defense, she had five sacks in two games.
|ALYSSA MOSES, ALMA BRYANT: Had three flag pulls, a sack and six quarterback hurries in the Hurricanes’ win over Theodore.
