AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week
MONTGOMERY – Minor High School (2-0) travels to Mountain Brook to face the unbeaten Spartans (2-0) tonight in the AHSAA TV Network High School Football Game of the Week.
WOTM TV will be producing the Class 6A, Region 5 opener for both teams to be shown over the AHSAA TV Network’s participating stations. The contest will also be live streamed over the NFHS Network and over wotm.tv. Executive producer is Vince Earley of WOTM TV. The commentators will be longtime TV personality Mickey Shadrix and for high school and college coach Rick Rhoades.
The Spartans of Chris Yeager, who is in his 17th year as the head coach at Mountain Brook, beat Class 7A schools Vestavia Hills 24-14 and James Clemens 42-21 to start the 2022 season. Yeager, who owns a 160-78 overall head-coaching record, took over Mountain Brook’s program in 2006 and has compiled a 135-58 record since to become the school’s all-time winningest football coach. The Spartans have gone 12-2 in each of the last two seasons reaching the Class 6A semifinals each year. He has guided Mountain Brook to 11 or more wins six times during his 17-year stretch.
Minor is also off to a fast start beating Huffman 49-25 and Paul Bryant 37-8 in its first two games. Coach Adrian Abrams, in his fifth season as head coach, is 20-23 with the Tigers – leading them to the 6A state playoffs in 2018, 2919 and 2020. Last year’s team was 2-7, but this year’s team is showing much promise.
Despite being located only 20 miles apart in Jefferson County, tonight’s meeting will be just the fifth meeting in school history and the for the first time since 2007. Mountain Brook owns a 3-1 record in the series with wins in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Minor won the first contest played in 1987.
The Spartans have a seasoned offense led by quarterback John Colvin, who has completed 20-of-31 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception this season. One of his favorite targets is receiver Clark Sanderson, who has eight catches for 179 yards this season and returned a punt last week for a touchdown in the James Clemens win. The backfield is well stocked with a trio of running backs including Cole Gamble, Will Waldrop and Jack King. King gained 111 yards last week and Gamble has rushed 30 times for 136 yards in the first two games. Defensively, defensive back Tucker Crawford had two interceptions in the season-opening win over the Rebels. Linebackers Trent Wright and Vaughn Frost have been major forces on the defense this season.
Minor quarterback Kareem Keye, a 5-foot-8, 160-pound senior, completed 29-of-39 passes for 410 yards and five touchdowns in the season-opening win over Huffman and is 49-of-72 for 713 yards and 10 TDs on the season. Dylan Foresight, a 5-5, 135-pound junior, and Darrian Jackson, a 6-4, 190-pound senior, have been two of the Tigers’ most explosive receivers. Foresight has eight catches for 181 yards and two TDs, Jackson has eight catches for 88 yards and two scores, and junior Tylan Amerson has nine receptions for 127 yards and two scores. Senior running back Malachi Moore has been a double threat running the football and catching passes out of the backfield. Senior defensive back Kelton Owens has 16 tackles and an interception thus far this season, senior linebacker Ashton Morgan has 12 stops, and up front, big senior Joshua Daniel is emerging as one of the state’s top blockers at 6-4, 330.
Southside-Gadsden beat Hokes Bluff in last week’s AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week 42-21. Next week’s Game of the Week will feature Valley at Sylacauga in a Class 5A, Region 4 battle.
