MONTGOMERY – Central, Clay County fell behind 7-0 in last week’s game with Elmore County, then scored 29 unanswered points to lift the Volunteers to a 29-7 Class 5A, Region 4 victory.
Now for the rest of the story. The triumph gave head coach Danny Horn his 358th career coaching win, which coupled with Citronelle’s 14-7 triumph over UMS-Wright, propelled Horn to the top of the ladder as the AHSAA’s winningest football coach in AHSAA state history and thrust the Hall-of-Fame coach and his team into this week’s AHSAA Week 7 Football Spotlight.
UMS-Wright’s Terry Curtis started the season as the AHSAA’s winningest coach but heading into this week’s games, he and Horn were deadlocked with 357 wins each. Horn’s record improved to 358-97 with Friday’s victory, and Curtis’s record with the loss is 357-102-0. Ironically, the two coaching legends’ careers parallel the same years. Both became head coaches in 1989, and both are still going strong 36 years later in 2024. Close on the heels of both Hall-of-Fame coaches is another HOF legend Paul Benefield of Fyffe. His Red Devils beat Sylvania 49-17 Friday in Class 3A, Region 8 to move his career record to 355-58-0. His head-coaching career started in 1992.
‘To be honest, this kind of snuck up on me. I can win when we have kids who are winners,” said Horn. “I have been blessed to have great players, outstanding assistant coaches and great support from our parents and fans.”
Having three head coaches’ competing for this lofty goal at the same is unparalleled in AHSAA football history. Curtis and Horn are the only two coaches in AHSAA history to coach eight AHSAA state football championships. Benefield has coached seven. All three have won their state crowns at the same school – albeit Horn with six state championships at Clay County and two since Clay County and rival Lineville merged to form Central of Clay County.
Benefield’s winning percentage of 86.0% is best in AHSAA history for coaches with more 200 or more games in the association.
Among the individual standouts for the Volunteers was quarterback DeShaun Gibbons. He tossed touchdown passes to Daniel Whetstone and Tyler Bond. Bond also had a 45-yard TD run for good measure.
Citronelle’s win over UMS-Wright was the first for the Mobile County school since 1999.
As for Horn, he guided Clay County from 1989-2008 to a 225-40 record and six state championships and never had a losing season. He then spent the next nine seasons at Benjamin Russell leading the Wildcats to a 62-43 record. Clay County and Lineville, which played in the Class 2A state finals at the first Super 6 Championships held at Legion Field in 1996 with Horn’s team winning 42-0, met 102 times in their legendary series with Lineville holding a 54-44-4 edge – outscoring Ashland 1,300 points to 1,225 or just 0.7 points per game. The two schools merged in 2012 to form Central of Clay County.
Lineville’s coach and Horn’s close friend Steve Giddens coached the Class 5A Volunteers to a 10-2 record the first season after the two schools merged. He became principal and then former Horn and Giddens assistant coach Kris Herron served as head coach for the next five years compiling a 41-19 record. Herron retired from coaching and Horn returned in 2018. He has served as the head coach ever since – compiling a 71-14 record with back-to-back state championships in 2018 and 2019.
He still has never had a losing season in Clay County. In fact, Central of Clay County stands as the only school in the AHSAA to never have a losing season. Now in its 13th season, Central is 122-35 overall since 2012 and 71-7 in region games.
“This is really special to have three coaches who have been coaching at the same time still with a chance to have this record,” Horn said. “I don’t think is has ever been done before. We all have a lot of respect for each other.”
The coaching milestone for Horn edged out three outstanding individual efforts by Auburn quarterback Jackson Kilgore, Bob Jones all-purpose back Rhys Dorsey and Washington County punt returner Tre Smith.
Kilgore was 13-of-19 passing for 265 yards and three touchdowns to lead Auburn (6-0) to a 38-33 victory over defending Class 7A state champion Central-Phenix City (5-1) in a key Region 2 battle of undefeated teams last week. He also rushed for 39 yards on 12 carries as the Tigers of Coach Keith Etheredge snapped the Red Devils’ 18-game winning streak in the process.
Dorsey, who starts at receiver, defensive back and handles kick returns, had three receptions for 40 yards, a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown, and a for good measure, he scored on a 92-yard kickoff return Bob Jones beat Florence 56-37 in Class 7A, Region 4.
Smith finished with three touchdowns, including a pair of 89-yard punt returns for scores, as the Bulldogs defeated Bayshore Christian on Thursday.
A number of other outstanding performances and milestones were also reported from Week 6.
