Shades Valley vs. Mountain Brook Tonight in AHSAA TV/NFHS Network Game of the Week
MONTGOMERY – Shades Valley High School travels to Mountain Brook High School in tonight’s AHSAA TV Network/NFHS Network Football Game of the Week produced by WOTM TV.
In addition, the NFHS Network’s AHSAA School Broadcast Program is live-streaming 249 events this week with 60 varsity football games being produced by AHSAA member schools Friday and 26 varsity volleyball matches set to be livestreamed tonight over the NFHS Network live-stream portal. A total of 102 varsity, junior varsity, freshman and middle school football games and 145 volleyball matches are set for the week’s schedule – up 25 percent from this time last year.
The Mounties (0-3) and Spartans (4-0) are meeting for the 35th time since the series began in 1966 with Shades Valley holding a 23-11 edge. The two teams, however, haven’t played since the Mountains’ 42-28 win in 2013. The Class 6A, Region 5 battle between two teams located just a few miles apart will be produced by NFHS Network TV partner WOTM under the direction of executive producer Vince Earley.
The game will be live-streamed over the NFHS Network subscriber-based program and will also be available on the network of cable stations that have joined the WOTM Network in Alabama. Tommy Wood and Rick Rhoades will be handling the commentary for the WOTM/NFHS Network production. Ironically, Rhoades coached Mountain Brook to its best season in school history leading the Spartans to the Class 4A state title with a perfect 14-0 record in 1976. He went on to have a very successful head-coaching career at the collegiate level winning the NCAA Division II national championship at Troy University in 1987 and led Delta State to the Division II semifinals in 2006. He also coached professionally in the XFL and in Europe.
Earley also announced the lineup of AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week pairings for next week will be another Birmingham battle pitting Fairfield at Jackson-Olin.
Coach Jamie Mitchell is in his first season as head coach at Shades Valley (0-3). Now in his 23rd year as a head coach, he has compiled a 216-76 overall record in a successful coaching career in Mississippi and Arkansas. He came to the Mounties from North Little Rock (AR), where he led his team to the state title in 2017 with a perfect 14-0 record. The Mounties have faced one of the toughest schedules in the AHSAA this season with tough losses to Clay-Chalkville (37-19), Pinson Valley (31-21) and Huffman (28-15). Those three opponents have combined for a 10-2 record this season. It won’t get any easier with the Spartans (4-0).
Mountain Brook, coached by Chris Yeager, picked up forfeit wins over Class 7A Vestavia Hills and Huntsville and a 51-0 win over Region 5 opponent Woodlawn and a 28-7 win over previously unbeaten Huffman last week. Yeager is in his 15th year as the Spartans’ head coach. He owns a 113-54 record during that span from 2006-2020 making him the winningest coach in Mountain Brook history.
The Spartans finished 8-3 last season in tough Class 7A, Region 3 but dropped down to Class 6A this season. Yeager said his team has high expectations. “We have a lot of returning players from last year’s squad that had a very good season in Class 7A’s toughest region,” he said. “They expect a lot out of themselves.”
Kickoff for tonight’s game is set for 7 p.m., and can be seen over the NFHS Network and the WOTM TV Network’s cable station affiliates across the state.
