MONTGOMERY – Three challenges were made in six AHSAA varsity high school football contests using DVSport Instant Replay last week, said AHSAA Director of Officials Mark Jones. One of the calls on the field were reversed, Jones reports
For the 2019 season, a 59 challenges have been issued by coaches with 13 calls overturned upon review, a 22.0% reversal rate.
The reversal of a call came in a Class 7A game between Auburn and Central-Tuscaloosa, Jones said. “Auburn challenged a Central touchdown on the  grounds that the runner may have stepped out of bounds before crossing  the goal line. The video review showed the runner stepped out of bounds at the one-yard line, and the ball was placed at the 1-yard line.”
Jones said  the other two challenges involved a catch/no catch in the Fayette County at Good Hope and the Gulf Shores at Spanish Fort games.

This week, four games will be utilizing the DVSport Instant Replay with three schools taking part for the first time this season.    DVSport Instant Replay is in its second year of implementation. The NFHS has granted the AHSAA a three-year period to experiment with instant replay in regular-season games.
Instant Replay reviews this fall have consisted of the following:

59 reviews with 13 reversals.  22.0%

  • 21 on catch/no catch
  • 20 fumbles
  • 5 breaking plane of goal line (note 2 were also fumble reviews)

  • 1 Illegal participation
  • 1 Illegal forward pass
  • 1 Penalty enforcement spot
  • 1 Kick out of bounds

A total of 67 schools, 17.4% of all AHSAA football-playing schools, have participated in AHSAA contests utilizing Instant Replay this season with four games scheduled for this week. Over the 2018 and 2019 seasons almost 40 percent of the AHSAA schools have had the opportunity to participate in a contest using  the DVSport Instand Replay.
