AHSAA Flag Football Spotlight
MONTGOMERY – Daphne High School’s Abby Johnson proved lightning can strike twice in the same place to earn this week’s AHSAA Flag Football Spotlight.
She returned two punts for touchdowns as the Trojans beat Satsuma 50-6 to remain unbeaten at 6-0. Johnson also had two pass receptions for 43 yards and threw a 66-yard TD pass – accounting for more than almost 200 total yards in her all-around performance.
Teammate Aubrey Gregg was also 4-of-6 passing for 81 yards and a TD to Mariah Williams, and Piper Crittenden was 3-of-5 passing with another touchdown connection. Dasia Matt added 109 yards rushing and two scores and Addy Hollis led the defense with eight flag pulls.
Daphne, coached by Jenny Laird, plays next in a tri-match with Robertsdale and Spanish Fort on Oct. 8.
Johnson’s performance edged out a super defensive effort by Marbury’s Abby Strength. She had had 14 flag pulls, including 2 pulls for a loss, to lead the Marbury defense in the 15-12 win over Francis Marion.

PASSING
JULIA ROSE, VESTAVIA HILLS: The Rebels’ quarterback was 24-of-25 passing for 250 yards and four touchdowns – to four different receivers – as Vestavia Hills (10-1) beat Oak Mountain 43-7.
BESS WHITTEN, HOMEWOOD: Passed for 209 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-13 win by the Patriots (5-3) over Gardendale.
GERRITT GRIGGS, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Was 18-of-27 passing for 199 yards and four TDs to lead the Red Devils (6-0) to a 34-6 win over Auburn. Teammate Mariah Harrison also threw a 56-yard TD pass and had two receptions for 18 yards and one score.
MARI-MARGRET GRAYSON, ALMA BRYANT: Completed 7-of-11 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 78 yards and two scores to lead the unbeaten Hurricanes (5-0) to a 39-6 win over Davidson. Her twin sister Madi-Mari Grayson caught four passes for 94 yards and two TDs.
KAYTIE CHANDLER, PRATTVILLE: Passed for 135 yards and three touchdowns on a 12-of-15 completion effort as the Lions (6-2) downed Mountain Brook 48-0.
TAYLOR KINDRED, HOOVER: Passed for 110 yards and rushed for 62 in the Bucs’ 15-13 victory over Helena.
MYAH MOTTON, AUSTIN: Was 18-of-29 passing for 107 yards and rushed for 69 yards in a 7-0 win over Grissom for the Black Bears (4-1).
TYA JACKSON AGNEW, HUNTSVILLE: Was 6-of-10 passing for 50 yards and also rushed for 30 yards and on TD in a 19-8 loss to Bob Jones.
RUSHING
JALADA WINCHESTER, LOAHAPOKA: Had 112 yards rushing in a 35-0 loss to Tallassee.
HARTLEY McCAY, PRATTVILLE: Rushed for two touchdowns, returned a punt for another score and swiped a pass on defense as the Lions (6-2) beat Mountain Brook 48-0.
PASS RECEIVING
NATALYN LUMPKIN, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Caught seven passes for 131 yards and three TDs in a 34-6 win over Auburn.
NUNU JERNIGAN, MARBURY: Had seven catches for 112 yards, returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown and added five flag pulls and two interceptions on defense to lead Marbury past Francis Marion 15-12.
CALLIE DAVIS, VESTAVIA HILLS: Caught seven passes for 94 yards and one TD in the Rebels’ 43-7 win over Oak Mountain.
BELL PARADISE, HOOVER: Had 90 receiving yards and a TD as the Bucs downed Helena 15-13.
ELISE MECHAM, HOMEWOOD: Grabbed four catches for 87 yards and a score, and teammate Kloeanne Smith had eight pass receptions for 77 yards, two touchdowns and an extra-point catch in the 20-13 win over Gardendale. Smith also had six catches in a 13-7 loss to Hueytown.
COLBY COOK, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Pulled down six pass receptions for 66 yards and one TD and made an interception on defense in 34-6 win.
LANIEYA PAGE, PRATTVILLE: Made four catches for 50 yards and a TD as the Lions blanked Mountain Brook 48-0. Mady Cate Lindsey added three catches and a TD, and London Williams had three pass receptions for 30 yards and one score.
LAYNER TURNER, VESTAVIA HILLS: Had six pass receptions for 48 yards and one TD in the Oak Mountain victory. Alexis Rubin also had five catches for 39 yards and a score, and Caroline Nintzel caught four passes for 37 yards and a TD.
JADAD BILLINGS, AUSTIN: Had six pass receptions for 45 yards in the Black Bears’ 7-0 win over Grissom. Teammate Chassidy Verser also had six catches for 30 yards.
DEFENSE
COURTNEY BATTLE, HUNTSVILLE: Grabbed two interceptions and had four tackles (flag pulls) in the Panthers’ 19-8 loss to Bob Jones. Camila Vega also had five flag pulls for Huntsville (2-3).
ZYLA BRYANT, HOOVER: Recorded a safety on defense for the Bucs (2-4-1) and had three sacks in a 15-13 win over Helena.
MOLLY MAC SHARP, VESTAVIA HILLS: Had two interceptions on defense and one flag pull in the Rebels’ 43-7 victory over Oak Mountain,
VENNECIA COBB, LOACHAPIKA: Made two interceptions on defense in the Indians’ loss to Tallassee.
ALYSSA MOSE, ALMA BRYANT: Had two sacks on defense and returned an interception for a touchdown in the Hurricanes’ 39-6 win over Davidson.
ALLY SUPAN, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Led the Red Devils’ defense with nine flag pulls.
MOLLY MITCHELL, VESTAVIA HILLS: Anchored the Rebels’ defense with nine flag pulls as Vestavia Hills beat Oak Mountain 43-7.
AUBREY MAJOR, HOMEWOOD: Had one interception and four pass break-ups on defense in the Patriots’ 20-13 win over Gardendale.
KAILIN STEELE, AUSTIN: Recorded six stops on defense and returned an interception for a TD in the Black Bears’ victory over Grissom. Teammate Kensile Philips had five stops and an interception, and Neveah Forster had two picks on defense.
CHLOE LEAHY, VESTAVIA HILLS: Had four defensive stops and an interception in the Rebels’ 43-7 flag win over Oak Mountain.
MORGAN FELTON, HOMEWOOD: Recorded four stops on defense in a 13-7 loss to Hueytown.
JA’NIYA GARRETT, CENTRAL-PHENIX CITY: Had an interception in the 34-6 win over Auburn.
