Current Season Reversal Percentage is 21.4%
Week 8 Has 12 Challenges, 1 reversal for Schools
Using AHSAA’s DVSport Instant Replay
MONTGOMERY – A record 12 challenges were made in nine AHSAA varsity high school football contests using DVSport Instant Replay last week, said AHSAA Director of Officials Mark Jones. However, only one of the calls on the field were reversed, Jones reports. It came, however, in one of the most exciting finishes of a contest using Instant Replay since the program began.
For the 2019 season, a 56 challenges have been issued by coaches with 12 calls overturned upon review, a 21.4% reversal rate.
The reversed call last week came in the Hamilton vs. East Limestone contest in Class 5A, Region 7. “With 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and Lawrence County trailing by 17-10, Hamilton intercepted a Lawrence County pass on third down-and-two from the 24-yard line,” Jones said “Lawrence County challenged that the play clock expired prior to the snap. The play clock was visible in the video review and the play clock and the replay review clearly showed that the time did expire prior to the snap.”
Jones said the the result was that the interception was nullified, the delay penalty was enforced to bring up third down from the 29-yard line.
“Lawrence County then completed a touchdown pass on the next play, which was challenged by Hamilton,” Jones said. “Upon review of that challenge, the touchdown stood as called. Hamilton then stopped Lawrence County on its two-point conversion attempt and won the game 17-16.”
Other challenges involved a backward pass, fumbles, forward progress spots, completed passes and verifying the correct down.
This week, six games will be utilizing the DVSport Instant Replay with five schools taking part for the first time this season. DVSport Instant Replay is in its second year of implementation. The NFHS has granted the AHSAA a three-year period to experiment with instant replay in regular-season games.
Jones reported that the Instant Replay reviews this fall have consisted of the following:
