50 AHSAA Football Contests Planned Thursday Night

MONTGOMERY –A total of 50 AHSAA high school football contests will be played Thursday night, October 24, several moved from Friday to avoid potential inclement weather.
Among them is Briarwood Christian in Class 5A, Region 4 – the AHSAA TV Network/NFHS Network Game of the Week. The game is being produced by WOTM TV with Vince Earley as executive producer, and the announcing team of Tommy Woods and Coach Rick Rhoades handling the commentary with Jon Holder as the sideline reporter. The contest will be available live on WOTM on several cable networks (Channel 80 on Charter Cable) and on the NFHS Network’s subscriber-based platform.
Earley also announced the final AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week for the regular season will be Gordo (8-0) at Pickens County (7-1) next Thursday, October 31. The county rivals have both won their respective region titles, the Green Wave in 3A, Region 4 and the Tornadoes in 1A, Region 6.
Thursday’s schedule had 11 contests originally scheduled prior to this week, but in an effort to avoid possible inclement weather, 39 other varsity games have been moved up from Friday to Thursday.
This week is the final round of region play for most schools. Many of the games will decided playoff participants.
The list of games currently set for Thursday night are listed below.
The Lions (7-1) of Coach Matthew Forester go into the game at Fairfield (3-5) tied at 5-1 in region play with Pleasant Grove (7-1) and Ramsay (7-2). Coach Keon Handley’s Tigers (3-3) need a win to clinch the fourth playoff spot in Region 4. Fairfield could wind up in a three-way tie for the final spot should Wenonah beat Parker in another Thursday game. Forester, an all-state linebacker at Briarwood finishing his last season as a player in 1998, is in his first season as head coach. He replaced his own high school coach, legendary Fred Yancey, who retired after last season with 319 career wins. Handley is in his third season as head coach at Fairfield.
The Rams host John Carroll Catholic in another Thursday game, and Pleasant Grove travels to Woodlawn Friday. Jasper (8-0) moved its game with Hamilton (7-1) to Thursday in Class 5A, Region 7. The Vikings are 6-0 in region play and Hamilton is 5-1. In Class 5A, Region 5, Central of Clay County (6-2) hosts Center Point (7-2) in a contest that could decide the Region 5 crown. The defending Class 5A state champion Volunteers are currently tied with the Eagles and Mortimer Jordan at 5-1 in region play. The Blue Devils (7-2) host Moody (3-5) on Friday.
In Class 6A, Hueytown (8-0) can wrap up the Region 4 championship with a win over Paul Bryant (6-2). The Gophers are 5-0 in region play and the Stampede (6-2) are 4-1. Bessemer City, which plays Northridge (1-7) Thursday, is also 4-1. Wins by Paul Bryant and Bessemer City could create a three-way tie for first place, requiring the region title to be decided by the tie-breakers.
Seventeen games are set for Thursday over the NFHS Network School Broadcast Program platform. Another 40 are set for Friday night.
