More than 150 Events Planned by NFHS Network SBP Schools
MONTGOMERY – Class 7A, Region 3 rivals Tuscaloosa County (0-5) and Hoover (4-1) bring storied histories into tonight’s AHSAA TV Network/NFHS Network Game of the Week. WOTM TV, under the direction of executive producer Vince Earley, is producing the contest – the sixth in the 2019 Game-of-the Week series.
The game will be live-streamed over the NFHS Network subscriber-based program and will also be available on the network of cable stations that have joined the WOTM Network in Alabama. Veteran announcer Tommy Wood and legendary football coach Rick Rhoades will be handling the commentary for the WOTM/NFHS Network production.
Earley also announced the lineup of AHSAA TV Network Game of the Week pairing for next week’s Game of the week – a Class 2A, Region 4 contest between Thorsby (3-3) and Fayetteville (4-1).
The Bucs have been the most dominating big-school program in AHSAA history, claiming 13 state football championships – with current head coach Josh Niblett leading the team to six state titles since arriving in 2008. His 142-21 record at Hoover is only surpassed by the 75-7 region record against some of the top 7A programs in Alabama. The program currently has a 497-173-7 overall record since its first season in 1963 with only 10 losing seasons in that 57-year span.
The Bucs had two players, center David Bodden and quarterback Robbie Ashford, named to the Alabama All-Star Team Wednesday. The 33rd annual All-Star Game versus Mississippi is set for Hattiesburg on Dec. 14.
Ironically, the Bucs’ last losing season came in 1998 – one year afrer Tuscaloosa County won the Class 6A state football championship for the Wildcats’ only state title in 1997. Tuscaloosa County, which has a 545-392-30 overall record dating back to 1923, posted undefeated teams in 1932 (10-0-1) and 1946 (9-0). The program, which has had 67 winning seasons in the last 97 years, has struggled since moving into Region 3 when the seven-classification format was introduced in 2014. Tuscaloosa County has gone 6-32 in region play 13-44 overall with wins coming in that first year transition.
Jay Todd, the son of long-time coach David Todd, is in his first season as head coach. He is the fourth head coach for the Wildcats in six years since that move to 7A. He is undaunted, however, about the task ahead of him and is committed to building the program into a contender once again.
The NFHS Network School Broadcast Program has four varsity games on tap tonight and 45 Friday. More than 150 football and volleyball varsity, junior varsity, freshman and middle school contests are planned through next Thursday.
In addition to tonight’s Hoover-Tuscaloosa County contest, the NFHS Network will show Florence at Huntsville, Smiths Station at Jeff Davis and Carver-Birmingham at Pelham. Some key region games set for Friday on the NFHS Network include: Pike County (5-0) at Providence Christian (6-0) in Class 3A, Region 3; Sparkman (6-0) at Austin (5-0) in Class 7A, Region 4; Hewitt-Trussville (4-2) at Vestavia Hills (4-1) and Thompson (5-0) at Spain Park (2-3); and defending Class 6A state champion Pinson Valley (3-2) at Gardendale (6-0) in Class 6A, Region 6.
A full slate of more than 40 volleyball contests are scheduled for tonight and next Tuesday.
